Hyder Ali gives Budikote its best-known biography, but not its beginning. The older name Vibhutipura and records associated with earlier regional powers point to a settlement history longer than the eighteenth century.
What the record supports
Gazetteer-derived accounts connect Budikote with an eighth-century Bana-period inscription and later references to Tekal province. These claims need to remain attached to their records; a loose stone cannot be dated by appearance alone.

Read the village in layers: older settlement, fort memory, Hyder Ali’s birth and present-day homes. If an inscription is visible, do not wet, chalk, rub or touch it for a photograph.
