SAI Sanctuary’s story begins with damaged coffee and cardamom land rather than untouched wilderness. Protection allowed native forest processes to return, making recovery itself the subject.

What the record supports

India’s OECM compendium dates the initiative to 1992, records an initial area of about 0.2 square kilometres and describes growth to about 1.21 square kilometres. It identifies SAI as India’s first private sanctuary in the conservation sense.

How to read the place

Look for structure rather than spectacle: leaf litter, canopy layers, dead wood and regeneration. Do not judge restoration by whether a large animal appears during a short visit, and do not translate “private sanctuary” into a public zoo.

Keep SAI Sanctuary distinct from nearby attractions. Their photographs, opening hours, permissions and facilities cannot be transferred to this site.
