Almatti Dam

The temple town about 43 km south-east of Vijayapura revered as the birthplace of Basavanna, the 12th-century philosopher, statesman and founder of the Lingayat Sharana movement; the Basaveshwara temple and a large Nandi mark the site.

One of the earliest and largest mosques of the Deccan, begun by Ali Adil Shah I in the 1570s, with a great arcaded prayer hall, a bulbous dome and a courtyard whose floor is marked out for hundreds of worshippers.

The elegant tomb-and-mosque complex of Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his queen, set in a walled garden; its finely carved minarets and lace-like stonework earned it the name "the Taj of the Deccan".
