A heritage hotel here usually means a genuine conversion — a Dutch or Portuguese-era merchant house or warehouse, thick walls, a courtyard, timber upper floors. The trade-offs are consistent across the category: character and quiet in exchange for small windows, uneven floors, occasional damp in the monsoon and stairs rather than lifts. If step-free access matters, ask specifically rather than assuming, because these buildings predate the concept.
The hostel and budget end clusters slightly inland from the waterfront, and the difference in price between a seafront address and a five-minute walk from it is substantial. On a peninsula you can cross in twenty minutes, that walk is usually the best-value decision available.
Timing, and the thing nobody tells you about the monsoon
December to February is dry, cool and the most expensive; rooms genuinely run out around New Year, when the Cochin Carnival fills the quarter. March to May is hot and humid and cheaper. June to September is the south-west monsoon: prices fall sharply, the peninsula is green and quiet, and rain arrives in heavy bursts rather than all day. Plenty of people prefer it, and heritage buildings with deep verandahs are pleasant places to sit out a downpour.
Ayurvedic treatment is traditionally considered best in the monsoon, when the air is cool and damp — which is why some properties price their treatment packages higher in exactly the season the rooms are cheapest.
