Thunchan Parambu is easier to visit than most Kerala heritage sites and harder to do properly. It is in the middle of a working market town, a kilometre and a half from Tirur railway station, and you can be through the gate ten minutes after stepping off a train. Do that and you will see a pleasant shaded compound and leave in twenty minutes. The rooms are the reason to stay.
Hours, ticket and camera
The Trust posts its terms at the gate and they are unusually clear for a Kerala institution. The grounds are open every day from 9.30 in the morning to 5.30 in the evening and there is no charge to walk in. The literature museum keeps the same hours and is ticketed at ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for children. The research library runs from 10 to 5 and closes on Mondays, which is the one thing that catches people out — everything else is open that day.
Photography is charged separately and the rates are posted: ₹50 for a still camera, and a mobile phone counts as one; ₹200 for two hours of mobile video; ₹500 for a two-hour photo shoot, and ₹200 for each hour beyond that. Carry cash for all of it.
What the Trust asks
Groups need permission in advance. The rule is written broadly and covers business meetings, classes, get-togethers and teacher-and-student parties, so a school or college trip that turns up unannounced can be turned away. The office takes those enquiries, and it also handles the letting of the mini hall and the auditorium.

The Trikkandiyoor Mahadeva temple is 1.2 km away, which makes the pair of them one morning on foot or in a single auto. Tirur bus stand is 2.1 km and Calicut International Airport at Karipur 34.6 km, about thirty-five minutes.
