Marine Drive is Ernakulam’s waterfront promenade — a wide, car-free walkway built along the backwaters on the western edge of the city. It’s where Kochi comes to stroll in the evening, and the easiest, most pleasant thing to do on the mainland.
- What: a pedestrian promenade along the backwaters in central Ernakulam.
- Best time: late afternoon into sunset, when it’s cooler and busiest.
- Don’t miss: the walkway bridges, the boat jetty, harbour-cruise boats.
- Cost: free to walk; a few hundred rupees for a short cruise.
A promenade on the water
Unusually for a city centre, Marine Drive faces open water — the Vembanad backwaters and the harbour beyond. The promenade is lined with benches, snack carts and ice-cream sellers, and pedestrian bridges arc out over the water for the best views back at the skyline. Families, couples and joggers fill it from late afternoon on.
Sunset and the boats
Come for sunset, when the light drops behind the harbour cranes and the ferries criss-cross the water. The boat jetties here run short harbour and backwater cruises — an easy, cheap way to get out on the water for an hour. The government ferry to Fort Kochi also leaves from nearby, so you can combine a Marine Drive evening with a crossing to the old town.

Pair it with the city
Marine Drive sits a short walk from MG Road and Broadway, so it’s easy to combine a shopping run with an evening on the promenade. See the rest in our things to do in Ernakulam guide.
