The banks are open and unfenced, so keep back from the soft edges and do not swim.
Day 2: West to Sringeri
Sunday heads west into the Ghats. Sharadamba Temple, Sringeri, about 95 km from Chikmagalur on winding ghat roads, is the seat of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham — the first of the four mathas founded by Adi Shankaracharya — and stands on the bank of the Tunga, where pilgrims feed the tame river fish. In the same complex, Vidyashankara Temple, Sringeri is a 14th-century marvel of Hoysala and early Vijayanagara work, famous for twelve zodiac pillars set so that sunlight falls on the pillar of the current solar month. About 20 km on near Kigga, Sirimane Falls is a gentle tiered cascade with a shallow pool for a paddle when the flow is moderate.
