The three seasons

Peak season — best weatherNovember to February

Dry, pleasant days around 30–32°C and comfortable evenings — the prime time for a houseboat cruise on the backwaters and for Alleppey Beach. It is also the busiest and priciest stretch, especially over Christmas–New Year, so book houseboats well ahead.

Summer — hot & humidMarch to May

Hot and sticky as the pre-monsoon builds, often past 33°C with high humidity off the lake. Crowds thin and rates soften; mornings on the water are still lovely, but plan around the midday heat.

Monsoon — green, cheap & AyurvedicJune to September

The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain — June and July are the wettest — turning the backwaters lush and emptying the resorts, so houseboat rates fall to their lowest. The Karkidakam month (July–August) is Kerala’s traditional monsoon-Ayurveda season, considered the most effective time for rejuvenation therapies.

Best weather vs best value

There is no airport at Alleppey — you fly into Cochin (COK), about 75–85 km away, then drive down (roughly 2–2.5 hours). COK flights are cheapest in the May–June low season and dearest over the October–February peak.

Houseboat and resort rates swing hard with the season: lowest in the June–September monsoon, highest from November to February. Booking a houseboat a few weeks ahead in peak season is wise; in the monsoon you can often negotiate on the day.

The trade-off is simple: November–February buys the best backwater weather at the highest prices; June–September trades heavy rain for the cheapest houseboats and the Ayurveda season.

Best time to visit Alleppey — FAQs

What is the best time to visit Alleppey?

November to February is the best stretch — dry, pleasant weather ideal for houseboat cruises and the beach. Kerala Tourism rates October to March the best window overall. Expect warm, humid days (~29–32°C) even then, as Alleppey is a sea-level backwater town.

Is it worth visiting Alleppey during the monsoon?

Yes, if you do not mind rain. June to September turns the backwaters lush and drops houseboat prices to their lowest, and the Karkidakam month (July–August) is Kerala’s traditional Ayurveda-rejuvenation season. The downside is heavy, near-daily rain, with June the wettest.

When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race?

It is held on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, traditionally on the second Saturday of August — but the date has shifted in recent years, so the 2026 edition is best confirmed on the official site (nehrutrophy.nic.in) before planning around it.

What is the cheapest time to visit Alleppey?

The June–September monsoon is cheapest — houseboat and resort rates fall sharply and crowds thin, with the bonus of the Ayurveda season. The trade-off is heavy rain. Peak season (November–February) has the best weather but the highest prices.
