Kozhikode sits on the Malabar coast, and its beaches are a study in contrasts — from the busy city seafront to quiet turtle sands, a shipbuilding port and a lighthouse on the rocks. Here are the best of them, north and south of the city.
Kozhikode Beach
The city’s own beach, off the beach road (Gandhi Road), is the local favourite for an evening out — long, open sand, the remains of old piers reaching into the sea, orange sunsets and rows of food stalls. It is a place to walk and eat rather than to swim, and it is where the city gathers at dusk.
Kappad — the historic beach
About 16 km north, Kappad (Kappakadavu) is quieter, rockier and steeped in history — the traditional spot where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498, marked by a stone monument. It is noted for its cleanliness (with Blue Flag recognition) and is a nesting area for endangered Olive Ridley turtles.
Beypore, Thikkoti, Payyoli and Kadalundi
Roughly 10 km south, Beypore is a working port with a long beach and a stone sea-wall, and the yards where wooden uru dhows are still built by hand. Further north, the Thikkoti lighthouse stands on the rocky shore near Payyoli — about 32 km from the city — overlooking the Velliyamkallu rock, with migratory birds from December to March; the lighthouse is open only for a few hours in the daytime, so check timings. Payyoli Beach, around 40 km out, is a quieter, secluded stretch. And where the Kadalundi river meets the sea, about 19 km south, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary draws migratory and resident birds to its estuary from around November to April.
