Few Kerala cities make a better base than Kochi. From here, waterfalls, tea country, backwaters and ancient trading ports are all close enough for a comfortable day out, so you can sleep in Fort Kochi and still fit in the highlights of central Kerala. Here are the day trips worth building a stay around.

Athirappilly and Vazhachal

The single most popular day trip: Athirappilly, Kerala’s biggest waterfall, roughly 60–70 km northeast of Kochi via Chalakudy, with the smaller Vazhachal falls just upstream. It’s at its thundering best just after the monsoon. An easy half- to full-day out, especially good with children.

The Munnar hills

Munnar, about 130 km east, is really better as an overnight given the ghat-road drive, but energetic travellers do it as a very long day trip for the tea hills and viewpoints. If you only have a day, consider stopping short in the high range rather than rushing the whole way up and back.

The Alleppey backwaters

Alappuzha (Alleppey) is around 50 km south, close enough for a day cruise on the backwaters — a shikara canoe or a shared houseboat lunch trip — before returning to Kochi by evening. It’s the easiest way to sample the backwaters without an overnight houseboat.

Muziris, Cherai and Kumbalangi

Closer to home, the Muziris heritage belt around Kodungallur and North Paravur — with its synagogue, churches, mosque and museums — traces Kerala’s ancient trade, a rewarding cultural day just north of the city. For the coast, Cherai beach on Vypin island is a short hop, and the island village of Kumbalangi offers a gentle day of backwater life and Chinese fishing nets.

Choosing your day trip
  • Waterfalls and family fun → Athirappilly (60–70 km); backwaters → Alleppey (~50 km); heritage → Muziris belt (just north); beach → Cherai.
  • Munnar (~130 km) is best overnight — as a day trip it’s a lot of driving for a short stay.
  • Hire a car with a driver for the day; it makes the round trips far easier than public transport.
  • Start early to beat both traffic and the midday heat, and book any backwater cruise directly.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best day trips from Kochi?

Athirappilly waterfall (about 60–70 km), the Alleppey backwaters (around 50 km) for a day cruise, the Muziris heritage belt just to the north, and beaches like Cherai on Vypin. Munnar is possible in a long day but is better as an overnight.

Can you do Munnar as a day trip from Kochi?

You can, but it’s about 130 km each way on ghat roads, so it makes for a very long day with little time at the top. Munnar rewards at least one overnight; for a day trip, the closer high range or Athirappilly is more relaxed.

How far is Athirappilly from Kochi?

Roughly 60–70 km northeast via Chalakudy — an easy half- to full-day trip, and the most popular escape from the city, especially just after the monsoon when the falls are in full flow.
