An afternoon at Hill View Park: the measured distances, the fees, and why you should stay until seven

Hill View Park does not need a day. It needs the right two hours, and they are the last two. The gate is open from 08:00 to 19:00 every day of the year, so unlike almost everything else in the Idukki dam country you can be standing at the railing while the light goes off the reservoir and the arch dam turns to a silhouette. Plan around that and the rest falls into place.

What it costs

The district tourism council publishes ₹25 for an adult and ₹15 for a child or a senior citizen. A still camera is ₹100 and video ₹200. A wedding shoot is ₹1,200, another album ₹6,000, and film or serial shooting ₹10,000. Booking is offline only — there is no online ticket — and the counter number given is +91 94469 69318. Government rates change without notice, so treat these as published figures rather than promises.

The distances, measured rather than repeated

Everything below was routed on 24 August 2026 from the park gate itself, not from a district centroid. Cheruthoni bus station is 2.5 km, about seven minutes. The Cheruthoni dam is 1.8 km. The KSEB hydel tourism centre for the arch dam is about 350 metres along the same road. The Civil Station at Painavu is 5.5 km. The arch dam itself is 5.5 km by road even though it is only about 1.6 km away across the gorge. Kalvari Mount, the cross-topped pilgrim viewpoint over the drowned valley, is 17.6 km — about 26 minutes. Kulamavu dam is 21.9 km.

Two corrections worth having. The council’s own page gives 4.1 km to Cheruthoni bus stand; the road measures 2.5 km. And it names Kottayam at about 98.5 km as the railway station — but Idukki has no railway of its own, and by road Aluva is both closer and quicker, 106.3 km against Kottayam’s 112.7 km. Cochin International Airport is 102.5 km. From Kochi city the drive is 107.6 km, about an hour and fifty-five; from Munnar 49.1 km; from Thekkady 58.6 km; from Thodupuzha 58.1 km.

How to spend it

Arrive by about half past four. Walk the sloping paved paths up through the croton beds and the pavilions to the watch tower at the top, which is where the arch dam reads best between Kurathimala and Kuravanmala, and pick out the five-gated Cheruthoni dam to the north while you are up there. Come down for the pond — pedal boats and a kutta vanchi coracle — or for the adventure zone if you have satisfied yourself about it. There is a canteen and there are toilets. Then take the railing again for the last half hour of light.

If you have a full day, put the hydel tourism counter first thing in the morning in case the dam crest happens to be open, drive out to Kalvari Mount in the middle of the day, and come back here for the evening. That is the Vellappara shoulder done properly.
