Not every Theyyam of North Malabar is a god from the beginning. Some are Hero Theyyams — ordinary people, remembered and deified for the way they lived and died. Among the most beloved is Kathivanoor Veeran, whose story is one of the tenderest in the whole tradition.
Mandappan, the headstrong son
By legend, Kathivanoor Veeran was Mandappan, a young man of the Thiyya community, drawn from childhood to the martial art of Kalaripayattu and blessed by the goddess Chuzhali. Wilful and hot-blooded, he fell out with his family and left his home near Mangad to make his own way, travelling east to Kudagu (Coorg) to trade and to fight.
The battle at Kathivanoor
There, at a place remembered as Kathivanoor, he went into battle to defend his adopted people — and was killed. In one of the most poignant turns of the tale, when his body was found a hand was missing, and his grieving wife, Chemmarathi, chose to follow him: she died on his funeral pyre. Out of that grief the community raised him, and the love that bound them, into worship.
Why women pray to him
Kathivanoor Veeran Theyyam is now performed across North Malabar, the warrior returning each season in fierce red to move and speak among his people. The women of the region worship him in particular for a long-lived, healthy husband — a devotion that grew straight out of the story of Chemmarathi’s faithfulness. When the performer leaps and circles the fire, it is the young warrior’s courage and his love that the grove remembers.
- Kathivanoor Veeran is performed at kavus across Kannur during the Theyyam season (roughly October to May).
- Ask locally for the kaliyattam calendar; the fire sequences are dramatic and draw large village crowds.
- Treat the performer and the kavu with respect, and follow each shrine’s photography rules.
