Ten days is enough to see Kerala’s highlights comfortably, from Kochi down to the southern beaches, without the whistle-stop rush of a shorter trip. This grand tour strings together heritage, tea hills, a wildlife reserve, the backwaters and the coast: Fort Kochi (2 nights), Munnar (2), Thekkady/Periyar (1), an Alleppey houseboat (1), a beach-or-lake day (1) and Varkala (2). All of it flows south down the state, so you fly into Cochin and out of Trivandrum.

Days 1–2 — Fort Kochi

Begin in Fort Kochi, the old port peninsula. Two nights give you time to wander the Portuguese, Dutch and British heritage streets, watch the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets at sunset, browse the art cafés, and catch a Kathakali performance in the evening — arrive early for the make-up demonstration.

Day 3 — Kochi to Munnar

Drive up to Munnar — about 130 km, roughly four hours — as the coast gives way to spice plantations and then tea. Stop at the waterfalls and viewpoints along the ghat road, and arrive in the cool of the hills by afternoon.

Day 4 — Munnar

A full day among the tea estates. Visit Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr — but confirm it’s open, as it usually closes January to March for calving — then take in the high viewpoint at Top Station and the small Tea Museum, with long, cool walks in between.

Day 5 — Munnar to Thekkady

Cross the cardamom hills to Thekkady — about 90 km, roughly three hours. In the afternoon take the Periyar Lake boat cruise to spot elephant, gaur and birds along the shore, and walk the fragrant spice plantations of pepper, cardamom and cinnamon.

Day 6 — Thekkady to Alleppey

Come down to the backwaters at Alleppey — about 140 km, roughly four hours — to board a houseboat around midday. Drift the backwaters through the afternoon, take dinner cooked aboard, and moor on the water for the night. Our houseboat guide covers booking a classified boat.

Day 7 — A beach or lake day

After you disembark, slow down with a day at Marari beach or lakeside Kumarakom on Vembanad — a gentle pause between the backwaters and the drive south. Either makes a restful counterpoint to the busier legs.

Days 8–9 — Varkala

Drive on to Varkala — about 200 km, roughly five hours — for two nights on the cliffs. Walk the clifftop path lined with cafés, drop to Papanasam beach below, watch the sun set over the Arabian Sea, and fit in an Ayurveda session if you like.

Day 10 — Varkala to Trivandrum

Trivandrum airport is about an hour from Varkala, making the final morning relaxed rather than rushed. See our budget guide for realistic daily costs across this kind of trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough to see Kerala?

Yes, comfortably — ten days covers the classic stretch from Kochi south to Varkala (heritage, hills, a wildlife reserve, the backwaters and beaches) without rushing. It doesn’t include the far north, which suits a separate Malabar trip.

What is the best time for this 10-day route?

October to March, when the coast is dry and the hills are crisp and clear. Avoid the peak of the June–September monsoon for the ghat-road drives.

Self-drive or a car with driver?

A car with a driver is the popular choice — the mountain roads to Munnar and Thekkady are slow and winding and best not driven after dark, and a local driver handles navigation and parking.

How can I shorten this itinerary?

Drop Thekkady, or trim a beach day, to bring it to about seven or eight days while keeping Kochi, Munnar and the backwaters intact.

What’s the rough budget for a 10-day Kerala trip?

It varies widely with your style of travel, the houseboat and the driver. See our Kerala budget guide for realistic daily figures across backpacker, mid-range and comfort travel.
