This is the classic first-timer’s loop through Kerala: a couple of days of heritage in Fort Kochi, up into the tea hills of Munnar, and back down for a night on a houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters — three very different sides of the state, all within about a five-hour drive of one another and easily reached from Cochin (COK) airport. Five days is enough to do it at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed.

Day 1 — Fort Kochi

Start slow in Fort Kochi, the old port peninsula. Wander the Portuguese, Dutch and British heritage streets, watch the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets worked at the harbour mouth (best at sunset), and duck into the art cafés in former trading houses. In the evening, catch a Kathakali performance — arrive an hour early for the make-up demonstration, which is half the show.

Day 2 — Kochi to Munnar

Drive up to Munnar — about 130 km, roughly four hours — as the coast gives way to spice plantations and then tea. Break the climb at the waterfalls and viewpoints along the way, and arrive in the cool of the hills by afternoon. The scenery on this leg is a highlight in itself, so leave time to stop and take it in.

Day 3 — Munnar

A full day in the tea country. Visit Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr — but confirm it’s open, as the park usually closes for a few weeks during the late-winter calving season — then take in the high viewpoint at Top Station and the small Tea Museum to learn how the estates work. Long, cool walks among the tea slopes fill any gaps.

Day 4 — Munnar to Alleppey

Come back down to the coast and on to Alleppey — about 170 km, roughly four and a half hours — to board a houseboat around midday. Spend the afternoon drifting the backwaters, take dinner cooked aboard, and moor on the water for the night. Our houseboat guide covers booking a classified boat and avoiding the common bait-and-switch.

Day 5 — Alleppey to Kochi

Houseboats typically check out around 9am after breakfast. From Alleppey it’s about an hour and a half back to Kochi for your onward flight or train — an easy final leg that leaves the morning relaxed rather than rushed.

Best time, extending to 7 days & getting around

October to March is the ideal window for this route — dry on the coast and crisp in the hills; see our best-time-to-visit guide for the month-by-month detail. To stretch it to seven days, add Thekkady’s spice country between Munnar and Alleppey, or finish with a couple of beach days at Varkala. Most people cover the loop with a hired car and driver rather than self-driving the ghat roads — our getting-around guide explains the options, and the budget guide gives realistic daily costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough for Kerala?

Yes, for a first trip — five days comfortably covers Fort Kochi, Munnar and an Alleppey houseboat night, which is the classic introduction to the state. Seven to ten days lets you add a beach or wildlife without rushing.

What is the best time for this route?

October to March, when the coast is dry and the hills are crisp and clear. Avoid the peak of the June–September monsoon for this itinerary unless you don’t mind heavy rain and slow ghat roads.

Self-drive or car with driver?

A car with a driver is the popular choice. The mountain roads to Munnar are slow and winding and best not driven after dark, and a local driver handles the navigation and parking while you take in the scenery.

How do I extend this to 7 days?

Add Thekkady (Periyar) between Munnar and Alleppey for spice plantations and a wildlife boat cruise, or tack on two beach days at Varkala after the backwaters.

What’s the rough budget for a trip like this?

It varies widely with your style of travel and the season, especially the houseboat and driver. See our Kerala budget guide for realistic daily figures across backpacker, mid-range and comfort travel rather than a single number.
