Kumarakom is a cluster of islands and lakeshore villages on the eastern side of Vembanad, Kerala’s largest lake, in Kottayam district. Where Alleppey is busy and boat-lined, Kumarakom is quieter and greener — a place of bird calls, paddy, coir villages and slow water — and it has grown some of Kerala’s best-known lakeside resorts.
What to do
The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a former rubber plantation on the shore, is the signature stop — best at dawn, when herons, egrets, darters and (in winter) migratory ducks are active; a naturalist walk brings it alive. On the water, take a houseboat overnight or an early-morning shikara (canoe) through the narrow canals, which get you closer to village life than the big boats. Aruvikkuzhi waterfall makes an easy add-on, and sunset over the open lake is the daily highlight.
Kumarakom or Alleppey, and when to go
They share the same lake. Choose Alleppey for the classic houseboat scene and more boats to pick from; choose Kumarakom for a calmer, more resort-and-nature stay with better birding. October to March is the prime season — dry, comfortable and the migratory-bird window. Book boats and stays directly where you can; the rate the owner sets is lower than an aggregator’s.
- The bird sanctuary is best at first light — go early and take a guide for the winter migrants.
- A dawn shikara canoe beats a big houseboat for seeing village life up the narrow canals.
- Kumarakom is about 16 km from Kottayam town and railway station; Cochin airport is roughly 85 km.
- Vembanad is shared with Alappuzha and Ernakulam — the same lake, different bases.
