Before You Enter the Water at Lighthouse Beach

The crescent of Lighthouse Beach can look sheltered from the path above. That view does not show the current at a particular point or the condition of the seabed that day. Before entering, read posted signs and ask an on-duty lifeguard where swimming is permitted. If no supervised area is clearly marked, do not infer that the whole beach is open for swimming.

What a rip current is

A rip current is a narrow flow of water moving away from shore through the surf. The US National Weather Service notes that even strong swimmers can be swept away. That general guidance does not map a current rip at Kovalam; conditions must be judged locally.

If you are caught in one

The National Weather Service’s guidance is to stay calm and avoid swimming straight against the current. If you can, swim across it parallel to shore and then return at an angle. If you cannot get free, float to conserve energy and wave or call for help. If someone else is in trouble, summon a lifeguard and throw flotation if available; do not enter a dangerous current to attempt an untrained rescue.

Make the choice on the day

Follow the beach’s actual signs, flags and lifeguard instructions. A red restriction means stay out. Do not rely on a fixed seasonal promise of lifeguard hours or a claim that another Kovalam beach is safer: neither is established for your visit by the sources on this page. Avoid the water when conditions are rough or local authorities close it, and keep children close at the shoreline.

The beach can still be enjoyed from land. The important distinction is between visiting Lighthouse Beach and treating a photograph, a bay shape or a travel article as permission to swim. Only current on-site advice can answer that.
