A short drive from Palakkad town, Malampuzha is the district’s easiest and most popular outing. It is built around the largest dam and reservoir in Kerala, which holds back the Malampuzha river — a tributary of the Bharathapuzha — but what draws families is everything laid out beside it: gardens, a ropeway, an aquarium and one very famous statue.

The gardens and the Yakshi

Below the dam spread the Malampuzha gardens — lawns, flower beds, fountains and a Japanese garden — a green space made for an evening stroll. Their most photographed feature is the Yakshi, a towering sculpture of a reclining enchantress by the celebrated Kerala sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman, which has become an emblem of the whole complex.

The rock garden, ropeway and aquarium

Nearby is a rock garden built from broken bangles, tiles and other discarded material, in the spirit of Chandigarh’s famous one. A cable-car ropeway carries visitors over the gardens and reservoir for the best overview of the dam, and there is a fish-shaped aquarium among the other attractions. None of it is wilderness — this is a landscaped park — but it makes an easy, enjoyable half-day, especially with children.

When to go

Late afternoon into evening is the pleasant time, when the heat eases and the reservoir catches the light; Palakkad’s midday sun is fierce for much of the year. The cooler November-to-March months are the most comfortable overall.

Good to know
  • Malampuzha is a landscaped garden-and-dam park, not a nature reserve — come for an easy, family-friendly outing.
  • Go late afternoon to dodge the midday heat and catch the light on the water.
  • The ropeway gives the best views over the dam and gardens.
  • It pairs neatly with a Palakkad town morning of the fort and Kalpathy.
