A paramotor is a parachute wing with an engine and a propeller strapped to the pilot’s back, and it takes off by running a few steps into the wind. On a wide flat beach with a sea breeze coming onshore, it is close to the ideal launch. Padinjarekkara has been using that fact since 17 March 2019, when the District Tourism Promotion Council started flying paying passengers off this sand.

What it costs and when it runs

Kerala Tourism gives the flight as ten minutes for three thousand rupees, run by the council at weekends — Saturdays and Sundays. That is the whole published specification. There is no online booking, no ticket window on the beach and no schedule beyond the two days, so the council’s Malappuram office is the contact, and a call before travelling is the difference between a flight and a drive.

What you get for it

The thing worth going up for is the shape of the place, which is invisible from the ground. From the sand you see a beach. From two or three hundred feet you see a bar of sand with the sea working one edge of it and flat river water lying against the other, the casuarina belt as a dark green stripe down the middle, and the whole spit tapering away south. It is ten minutes and it is the only way to see it.
