Twenty-four years without a bus

Ask why Paravur Pozhikkara feels less visited than the beaches four kilometres in either direction and the answer is not scenery. It is that for twenty-four years you could not get a bus here.

The road

The Kollam–Paravur Coastal Road runs 14.1 kilometres from Chinnakada in the north to Paravur in the south, along the strip of land between the backwater and the sea. It passes Kollam Beach, Mundakkal Beach and Pozhikara, and runs through Kochupilamoodu, Mundakkal and Valathungal.

It is maintained by the Kerala Harbour Engineering Department rather than by the state highways department — a small detail that tells you the road is understood as coastal infrastructure first and a road second. It is still logged as under reconstruction. The longer-term intention is that it serve as a bypass diverting NH-66 traffic, and eventually as a new port access road to Kollam Port.

The gap

In December 2015 the Harbour Engineering Department completed the renovation of the Pozhikara–Thanni section and opened it to the public.

On 8 July 2016, bus services resumed after a gap of twenty-four years.

Sit with that. A coastal settlement twelve kilometres from a district headquarters, on a road, had no bus service from around 1992 until 2016. A child born when the buses stopped was old enough to vote before they came back.

That is the actual reason this place reads as remote when the map says it is not, and it is a far more honest explanation than the "hidden gem" framing the listings reach for. Pozhikkara was not undiscovered. It was cut off, by the condition of a fourteen-kilometre road.

What the road brought

Promotion, mostly. The district tourism council now markets this stretch — Thanni Beach, immediately north, is advertised with tetrapods, sunrise and sunset, yoga, football, volleyball, cycling and kite-flying. A Matsyafed fish sales point opened in the municipality in November 2020.

What the road did not bring is servicing. There are still no lifeguards, no changing rooms, no toilets and no documented parking anywhere at the pozhi. That combination — actively promoted, entirely unserviced — is the honest description of this place, and it is the condition in which three teenagers were swept away in February 2026.

A resident's verdict

Almost all the photographs of this coast on Wikimedia Commons were taken by one person, a Paravur resident, over more than a decade. In 2015 he uploaded a collage of the area and wrote its description himself:

That was written a few months before the road reopened and a year before the buses came back, so it is not the last word. But it is a dated, on-the-record verdict from somebody who lives there, and it is a more useful thing for a visitor to have read than another paragraph about unspoilt sands.

Come by train to Paravur station, two kilometres east, or by bus to Paravur stand. Then walk or take an auto to the water, and expect a beautiful place with nothing on it.
