On the morning after Christmas 2019, an annular solar eclipse crossed south India. Kozhikode is usually described as having seen a partial eclipse that day. That is an understatement, and it should be corrected, because the city was inside the path.

Kozhikode appears in the tables of locations where annularity was visible, with the ring phase running from 09:26:33 to 09:27:51 — one minute and eighteen seconds. Other Kerala towns in the same table include Kasaragod, Padne, Kannur, Thalassery, Koduvally and Kalpetta, with Mangaluru to the north. Kozhikode’s 1:18 is among the shorter durations listed, which places the city near the edge of the annular band rather than on its centreline. Maximum obscuration was about ninety-three per cent — consistent with annularity, since in an annular eclipse the Moon never covers the whole disc at all.

What that means, and why it matters

An annular eclipse is the single most dangerous celestial event for an untrained crowd. In a total eclipse there is a window — the couple of minutes of totality — during which it is safe to look with the naked eye, and the danger is at the edges of it. In an annular eclipse there is no such window. The photosphere is never fully covered. The sun must be filtered for every second of the three hours, and it never stops looking bright enough to hurt you.

Which is exactly what a science centre is for on such a morning, and the Regional Science Centre is where Kozhikode went.

The morning, hour by hour

That day is unusually well documented, because a Wikimedian was in the compound with a camera and uploaded twenty-one photographs and two video files under a free licence, with timestamps that map the morning almost hour by hour.

At 08:18 there are several hundred people under the trees inside the compound, a banner strung behind them, and a reporter with a national wire agency’s microphone working the crowd. At 09:04, twenty minutes before annularity, a digital telescope is being set up on a flat roof beside the water tanks, staff crouched over the mount with chairs stacked behind them. At 09:07 the photographer captions a frame: people in queue to get a chance to observe eclipse through telescope. And at 10:11, long after the ring has passed and with the partial phase still running, a boy is bent to the eyepiece of a large refractor with a ring of children and parents waiting their turn — the centre’s full-size rocket model visible white and black above the palms behind them.

What the photographs show, apart from a crowd, is the two mitigations that actually work: certified handheld eclipse viewers distributed to the public, and filtered instruments operated by staff so that nobody points their own optics at the sun. Several hundred people getting it right at once is what an institution looks like when it is working.

One footnote from the same morning belongs to the city rather than to the centre, and should not be attributed to it: a peer-reviewed paper on trace pollutant fluctuations observed in Calicut during that eclipse. Eclipses are natural experiments in atmospheric chemistry — the sudden removal of sunlight suppresses photochemistry and collapses the boundary layer — and Calicut’s position inside the annular path is why researchers were measuring there at all.

The centre still does this work

A star party in February 2026, run with a government college at Koyilandy: an astronomy demonstration lecture, sky observation through reflectors and refractors, constellation navigation with star charts, lunar craters and maria, a meteor watch, and a screening of a film on life in the universe.

A standing night programme, bookable by any group of twenty-five or more at ₹200 a head: an introductory programme at seven, a guided gallery tour at 7:40, telescope observation at eight — provided, as the centre carefully puts it, the sky is clear. An amateur astronomy club that makes telescopes and runs Messier marathons, meteor watches and roadside astronomy. And a six-month certificate course in astronomy and astrophysics, whose sixth edition was advertised in November 2025.

None of that needs the dome, which is worth remembering while the dome is dark.
