Three prices for one walk

Here is a question that ought to have one answer: how much is the guided walk at Thenmala, and how far does it go?

We put it to the operator's own website on 15 August 2026 and came away with three answers.

Page one

The soft trekking page describes a guided programme through forest along the reservoir. Distance 4 km. Duration 2 hours. Between 06:00 and 16:00. Minimum five trekkers or an equivalent payment of ₹625. Maximum twenty. ₹125 per domestic trekker, ₹190 international, ₹80 for a school party.

Page two

The tariff table, on the same domain, prices a line item called "Soft trekking (2 km)" at ₹130 adult, ₹130 child, ₹85 excursion and ₹195 international.

Two kilometres, not four. A hundred and thirty rupees, not a hundred and twenty-five.

Page three

The visitor FAQ — the page a first-time visitor is most likely to read — answers the same question with: 4 km covered in 2 hrs, trekking fee ₹60 per adult, ₹60 per child, international ₹120, minimum of five trekkers or an equivalent payment of ₹300.

Sixty rupees. Less than half the tariff table on the same website.

Why this is not three typos

Do the arithmetic and the pattern falls out immediately.

On page one, ₹125 × 5 = ₹625, which is exactly the party minimum that page states. On page three, ₹60 × 5 = ₹300, which is exactly the party minimum that page states. Each page is internally consistent with itself — its per-head rate and its five-person minimum agree.

That is not what typos look like. It is what happens when a price rises and somebody updates one page. The FAQ is not wrong in the sense of being garbled; it is a whole earlier generation of the tariff, preserved intact, still live, still answering the most-asked question on the site with a number that was current some years ago.

The distance is harder to explain away, because 2 km and 4 km are not a price at two dates. Either the route was shortened, or the tariff line was written by somebody who did not check. We cannot tell you which.

And then a fourth source

Kerala Tourism — the state department, not the site operator — publishes its own page for the same programme. It gives the window as 09:00 to 16:00.

The operator says the walk runs from 06:00, and advises in its own FAQ that the best time is 07:00 to 10:00. Both its day-trip and overnight itineraries schedule the trek at 06:45 to 08:45. So a visitor who trusts the state tourism department will not think to arrive before nine, by which time the best two hours of the day for this walk are gone.

What we think you should do

Budget around ₹130 a head and be unsurprised if the counter says something else. Assume the walk is the full four kilometres and dress for forest ground, not for a garden path. Aim to be at the facilitation centre by seven if you can, which is the operator's own advice and the opposite of the state's.

And ring first. This is a site whose website carries a 2019 copyright line, whose security certificate expired in July 2025 and was never renewed, whose sanctuary-trekking page consists of a link to a domain that returns a 404, and whose main navigation has a Trekking item that opens a completely empty page. The information is not being maintained. The phone is.
