There is no version of Vellarimala’s story that can be told around the night of 30 July 2024, and this article does not try. Between roughly 02:17 and 04:30 Indian Standard Time, high on the slopes above Meppadi panchayat in Wayanad district, a mass of rock let go. What began as a rockslide became, within seconds, a debris flow — the most destructive form a landslide can take, in which rock, soil, water and shattered vegetation move together as a single dense fluid, picking up everything in the channel and accelerating as it goes. Below it, along the Punnapuzha, lay the settlements of Punchirimattam, Mundakkai and Chooralmala. Most of the people in them were asleep.
What the satellites established
The geometry has since been mapped in unusual detail, because the event was studied under ISRO’s disaster management support programme using Cartosat-3 and RISAT satellite data, with the findings published in the peer-reviewed journal Landslides by researchers from the University of Kerala, IISER Mohali and Savitribai Phule Pune University. Their reconstruction places the crown — the top edge of the failure — at about 1,550 metres above sea level. Roughly 25,565 square metres of rock collapsed. The flow scoured the valley beneath it and generated an estimated 0.83 million cubic metres of debris. It ran close to eight kilometres and dropped 768 metres. ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre put the devastated area at approximately 86,000 square metres.
One detail from that work deserves emphasis, because it changes how the mountain should be understood. The crown zone was not virgin ground. It was a reactivation of an older landslide scar. The slope had failed there before, healed over with vegetation, and failed again along the same weakness. Deeply weathered, fractured rock of the kind that makes up much of this landscape does not forget.
The rain
It was extraordinary. Figures reported for the catchment give 204.5 millimetres in the first twenty-four hours and 372.6 millimetres in the following twenty-four — very close to 580 millimetres in two days, falling on ground already saturated by weeks of monsoon. The Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology, a Wayanad organisation that runs a dense network of community-operated rain gauges across the district, recorded 572 millimetres in forty-eight hours at Puthumala, the station nearest to Mundakkai. That is more rain than preceded the Puthumala and Kavalappara landslides of 2019, both of which killed.
The Hume Centre’s readings became, afterwards, one of the most difficult threads in the whole story. The centre says it issued a warning on the morning of 29 July, some sixteen hours before the slope failed. The Wayanad Collectorate stated that it had received no official communication from the centre and, in a subsequent note, characterised such warnings as unofficial. Both positions are on the public record and we make no attempt here to adjudicate between them. What is not disputed is what followed: the district now leans heavily on micro-level rainfall monitoring, the Hume network has been expanded, and local bodies have pressed for a warning system built for the Western Ghats specifically rather than for districts as a whole.
The toll, and why it has no single number
It would be dishonest to pretend one exists. In the first days the confirmed count climbed in stages — 84, then 123, 165, 222, 274. On 3 August 2024 Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, confirmed 308 deaths, noting that 195 bodies and 113 body parts had been recovered; the mismatch between those two figures is itself a description of what the debris flow did. The state separately confirmed 221 identified dead, including 97 men, 87 women and 37 children. Later compilations run higher, from 298 up to a tally of 420 dead, 397 injured and somewhere between 47 and 118 missing. Dozens of people were never found, and DNA matching between unidentified remains and the relatives of the missing continued for months.
Among the dead were more than twenty pupils of the Vellarmala Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Chooralmala, an institution that had served the estate villages for generations. The school building was destroyed. It was rebuilt on a new campus at Meppadi and inaugurated in 2025.
The bridge in thirty-one hours
The rescue is part of the record too. More than 1,500 personnel — Army, NDRF, state police, fire services and very large numbers of volunteers — worked a site cut in half by the river, with the far bank unreachable. The Army’s response was to build a 190-foot Bailey bridge across the Punnapuzha in thirty-one hours. It did the thing that mattered: it let heavy equipment and stretchers cross.
What came after has been slower. The Kerala government took over 64.4 hectares at Elstone Estate near Kalpetta on 11 April 2025 for a purpose-built township, planned at 410 houses for 402 families. The Chief Minister inaugurated the first phase on 1 March 2026, handing over 178 houses; a further 157 were under construction through mid-2026, and the remainder promised by December. Alongside that has run a long public argument about relief funds, and separate agitations by plantation workers over compensation. Rehabilitation on this scale is not a single event either.
What it means for a visitor
The practical implication is simple and worth stating plainly. Mundakkai and Chooralmala are not places to go and look at. They are the site of a mass casualty event whose survivors are, in 2026, still moving into new houses a few kilometres away. Route descriptions that still list Chooralmala as the gentler way onto Vellarimala were written before 30 July 2024 and have not been touched since. The mountain above is the same mountain; the country below it is not.
That is the fact this page exists to carry. Vellarimala is the highest ground in the Western Ghats north of the Nilgiris, a genuine sky island, still yielding species new to science. It is also a slope that has failed repeatedly — in 1984, in 2019 at Puthumala, in 2024 above Mundakkai, and again at Kalladi on 7 July 2026 — and that is now being tunnelled through. Anyone thinking about walking on it should begin from there, and should ask the forest range office rather than a webpage what is currently permitted (indicative — confirm locally).
