Name the side of the range first
Vellarimala spans the Thamarassery region of Kozhikode and the Meppadi side of Wayanad. A destination named only after the range can therefore leave the actual approach unresolved. For this page, the visitor base is Muthappanpuzha on the Kozhikode side.
Keep that locality in the travel instruction. A vehicle journey towards Muthappanpuzha is not the same as travelling to Meppadi simply because both names appear in descriptions of the mountains. The correct foothill base should be settled before arranging the road transfer.
The published sequence explains a landscape
The March 2025 Aranyam feature names Muthappanpuzha, Anakkampoyil and Pulloorampara at the foothills and describes a trekking path from Muthappanpuzha towards the forest, with Olichuchattam waterfall along the narrative. It also names features including Swargamkunnu, RECpara, Mastakappara and Camel Hump in the wider landscape.
These names help a reader understand why accounts of Vellarimala can sound different: some concern the approach village, some a waterfall, and others a high feature. They should not be assembled into a fixed itinerary without establishing the actual route and its current authorisation.
The magazine feature is a landscape and natural-history account. Its description of a path does not issue a permit, name a current guide allocation or guarantee that the entire described route is open on a chosen date.
A visitor base is not a summit pin
The map uses an exact mapped point at Muthappanpuzha as the named arrival base. This is deliberately a settlement reference for the road journey. It makes the first stage intelligible while leaving any forest reporting arrangement to the current authorised programme.
When a guided outing is available, use its stated reporting place and conditions. A general destination map should not replace those instructions. The difference is especially important in a range where a familiar name can refer to terrain far beyond the road.
Keep a useful alternative at the foothills
If the intended forest route cannot be confirmed, do not arrive expecting a local resident to improvise permission. A road visit to the foothill area and a forest trek have different requirements. Decide which is actually available before committing the day.
The distinction preserves the purpose of the journey. Someone interested in the wider landscape may still value the foothill setting, while a person travelling specifically for a guided ascent should arrange that programme first.
Good route reading begins with the names at their correct scales: Muthappanpuzha as a village base, Vellarimala as a range, and named waterfalls or ridges as particular features within it. That understanding is more useful than a single distant mountain pin.
