Kanhangad railway station, code KZE, opened in 1910 on the electrified Shoranur-Mangalore double line in Southern Railway's Palakkad division and works three platforms and four tracks for roughly 3,000 passengers a day. It matters more than its NSG-4 grading suggests because it is the closest railhead to Bekal Fort and to the Central University of Kerala campus at Periya.
