Getting Around Kochi
Kochi is two cities a ferry apart, and it has Kerala’s best transport mix — a modern Metro and electric Water Metro, cheap government ferries, auto-rickshaws and a whole shelf of ride-hailing apps. Here is every option, what it costs, the apps to download, and how to get a metro card.
The ways to get around
Walking covers the Fort Kochi heritage quarter. The Kochi Metro runs north–south across mainland Ernakulam; the Water Metro and government ferries link Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Vypin and the city across the backwaters. Auto-rickshaws and app cabs cover everything else, and the airport (COK) is about 40–45 km out. For street-level detail by area, see getting around Fort Kochi and getting around Ernakulam.
What it costs
| Mode | Typical fare | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-rickshaw (short hop) | ₹50–100 | Insist on the meter or agree the fare first |
| App cab (across the city) | Metered in-app | Uber / Ola / Namma Yatri show the price upfront |
| Kochi Metro | ₹10–60 | By distance; 20% off with a Kochi1 card |
| Kochi Water Metro | ₹20–40 | AC electric boats; QR via Kochi1 app or card |
| Government ferry | A few rupees | Cheapest way across to Fort Kochi / Vypin |
| Airport taxi (prepaid) | ₹900–1,300 | ~40–45 km; app cabs are often cheaper |
Ride-hailing & transit apps
Using an app removes fare haggling. Uber and Ola are the big names; Kochi also has zero-commission and government-backed apps that book autos and cabs directly with drivers, often for less. Every link below was checked to open the official store listing.
The familiar ride-hailing app for metered cabs across Kochi, with upfront pricing.
- Upfront fare, no haggling
- Works 24×7, English app
- Easy for airport and longer city trips
- Pickups can be slow inside the narrow Fort Kochi lanes
- Surge pricing at peak times
India’s home-grown app — and crucially it has Ola Auto, so you can book a metered rickshaw, not just a cab.
- Books autos (Ola Auto) as well as cabs
- Wide driver coverage in the city
- Upfront fares
- Surge and occasional cancellations at busy times
Best known for cheap bike taxis, Rapido also books autos and cabs and runs a “Bike-Metro” feeder to Kochi Metro stations.
- Cheapest option for quick solo hops
- Also does autos and cabs
- Bike feeder to/from Metro stations
- Smaller cab fleet than Uber/Ola
Rapido’s bike-taxi service has faced union opposition and legal disputes in Kerala (2026), so bike-taxi availability can be disrupted. Its auto and cab bookings are unaffected.
A zero-commission auto and cab app — drivers keep 100% of the fare, which often means a lower price for you.
- Drivers keep the full fare; often cheaper
- Direct UPI payment
- No surge gimmicks
- Smaller driver pool than Uber/Ola — wait can be longer off-peak
Kochi’s own open-mobility auto and cab app, built with the local auto unions on a zero-commission model.
- Made for Kochi; fair, transparent fares
- Supports local drivers directly
- Coverage and availability vary by area and time
Kerala’s government-backed community ride app for autos and cabs, with regulated, transparent fares.
- Official Kerala Motor Vehicles Dept backing
- Transparent, regulated fares
- Newer service — driver supply is still thinner
The official Kochi Metro app: buy QR tickets for the Metro and Water Metro, and manage the Kochi1 travel card.
- One app for Metro + Water Metro QR tickets
- 20% off fares with the Kochi1 card
- Official KMRL app
- Transit only — does not book autos or cabs
Metro & Water Metro cards — how to get one
The Kochi Metro and Water Metro both run on the Kochi1 prepaid card — a contactless card you tap at the gates — or on QR tickets bought in the Kochi1 app. The card gives a 20% fare discount and is valid for three years.
- Buy it at any Metro station issuance counter or a select Axis Bank branch.
- Fill a short form (name, address, DOB, phone, email); a personalised card is printed in about two minutes.
- For a higher wallet limit (up to ₹20,000), do Full-KYC with ID at the counter; otherwise a basic card is fine.
- For a short trip, skip the card: just buy QR tickets in the Kochi1 app — no card, no KYC, works for Metro and Water Metro.
- Want the 20% discount? Buy a basic Kochi1 card at a station counter with your passport as ID and top it up with cash.
- Full-KYC (₹20,000 limit) needs documents and is usually unnecessary for a tourist — a basic card or app QR is enough.
Top-up: Reload from ₹100 at station counters (cash or card) or online / in the Kochi1 app.
No card? No physical card needed for a short visit — the Kochi1 app sells QR tickets for both the Metro and the Water Metro.
Why bother: 20% off every ride with the card; contactless tap-in / tap-out; one card or app covers Metro and Water Metro.
- Agree the auto fare before you get in, or insist on the meter — or just use a metered app.
- The ferry and Water Metro beat road traffic across to Fort Kochi, and the views are free.
- At night, an app cab is safer and clearer on price than flagging a random auto.
- Ignore “your sight is closed, let me take you elsewhere” — it’s a commission detour.
Getting around Kochi — FAQs
Which taxi app is best in Kochi?
Uber and Ola are the most reliable for cabs, and Ola also books autos. For lower fares, the zero-commission apps Namma Yatri, Yatri (Open Kochi) and the government-backed Kerala Savaari book autos and cabs directly with drivers. Rapido is cheapest for bike hops, though its bike-taxi service faces legal disputes in Kerala.
Is Uber and Ola available in Kochi?
Yes. Both operate across Kochi 24×7. Ola additionally offers Ola Auto for booking metered rickshaws, not just cars.
How do I pay for the Kochi Metro and Water Metro?
Use the official Kochi1 app to buy QR tickets for both the Metro and the Water Metro, or tap a Kochi1 prepaid card for a 20% fare discount.
Are bike taxis legal in Kochi?
It is contested. Rapido’s bike-taxi service has met union opposition and legal challenges in Kerala in 2026, so bike-taxi availability can be disrupted. Auto-rickshaw and cab bookings through the same apps are not affected.
How much does an auto-rickshaw cost in Kochi?
Short hops are roughly ₹50–100. Insist on the meter or agree the fare before you set off, or use a metered app (Ola Auto, Namma Yatri, Yatri) to avoid haggling.
