The three seasons
Dry, pleasant days around 30–32°C and comfortable evenings — the prime time for houseboat cruises on Vembanad, lakefront resorts and birdwatching, and the best season for migratory birds at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. It is also the busiest and priciest stretch, especially over Christmas–New Year, so book resorts and houseboats well ahead.
Hot and sticky as the pre-monsoon builds, often past 35°C with high humidity off the lake. Crowds thin and rates soften; early mornings on the water are still lovely, but plan around the midday heat.
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain (~1,100 mm), turning the backwaters lush and dropping resort and houseboat rates to their lowest. Resident-bird watching is still good around June–August, and the Karkidakam month (July–August) is Kerala’s traditional monsoon-Ayurveda season.
