Everything written for visitors about Kadalundi is about what arrives: the waders in winter, the terns, the tide filling and emptying the flats. Almost nothing is written about what is leaving. A study of this estuary published in 2016 puts it bluntly — sand bars forming at the river mouth have caused massive dieback of the mangrove vegetation.

What a sand bar does to a mangrove

A mangrove is not a plant that tolerates salt water; it is a plant that requires the specific regime an estuary provides. Tidal exchange twice a day, brackish water of a particular range, soft mud that drains and refloods, and oxygen reaching the roots through the pneumatophores that stick up out of the mud. Change any of those and the trees do not simply grow more slowly. They die standing.

A sand bar across a river mouth changes all of them at once. It restricts the exchange between river and sea, so salinity swings out of range in one direction or the other depending on the season. It alters where silt settles, so mud accumulates where it did not or stops arriving where it did. And it can leave root systems waterlogged for longer than they can breathe. The species named in the research as suffering the worst of it is Avicennia marina — the grey mangrove, one of five mangrove species recorded in the Kadalundi–Vallikkunnu Community Reserve.

And the sand bar is not the only pressure

The same research lists the other stresses on this estuary, and they are the ordinary business of a working coast rather than anything dramatic: overfishing, collection of oysters and mussels, mining of sand and lime, and the retting of coconut husks in the water. None of these is new and none of them is illegal in itself. The community reserve was declared, in 2007, precisely over land where these activities carry on.

Why this belongs on a page for visitors

Because it changes what you are looking at. Dead and dying mangrove is visible if you know to look for it — standing grey stems, thinned canopy, a fringe that has retreated from where the old photographs show it. Once you can see it, a walk at Kadalundi stops being a bird count and becomes something more interesting: a place where you can watch a specific, named, physical process doing damage in real time.

And because the honest chain runs all the way to the birds. Waders come here for what lives in the mud. The mud is held in place by mangrove roots. The mangrove needs a tidal regime that a sand bar interrupts. There is no version of this estuary that keeps the winter spectacle and loses the trees.

What we are not saying

We are not saying the sanctuary is finished, or that a visit is pointless, or that anyone in particular is to blame. Sand bars at river mouths form and shift naturally as well as in response to what people do upstream and along the coast, and disentangling the two is the work the researchers are doing rather than something we can settle. What we are saying is that this is the substantive thing happening at Kadalundi, that it is documented, and that leaving it out of a guide to the place would be a decision about tone rather than about truth.
