The English Wikipedia infobox for Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary gives a total height of 200 metres — 660 feet. Kadalundi is the estuary where the Kadalundi river meets the Arabian Sea. Its defining feature is that the tide comes in and goes out across it twice a day. Tidal water is, by definition, at sea level. The figure cannot describe the sanctuary.
Where the number goes when you chase it
The article’s body text has an answer: “The Sanctuary hill is around 200 metres (660 ft) above sea level.” There is a low wooded hill behind the flats — it is real, it is the viewpoint, and climbing a little of it is how most visitors first make sense of the geography. So one reading is that the infobox took a hill’s elevation and filed it as the height of a sanctuary that is mostly water.
That would be the same failure shape we have written about twice on this site: a dam at Malampuzha whose reservoir’s sea level became its height, and a hill in Kasaragod published at three elevations because nobody said which point each referred to. A labelled number loses its label and becomes something else.
What we did next, and why we stopped
The obvious move was to check the hill. We sampled elevation data across several kilometres around the sanctuary and the highest ground we found was around sixty metres, with most of the area under ten. That looks decisive, and we are not publishing it as the answer.
- We calibrated the same tool against places we already have sourced figures for. It read a Western Ghats hill station correctly and a high shrine about 15% low.
- Then it read Madayipara — a documented laterite plateau at 40 to 47 metres, in our own research — at a maximum of 20 metres.
- A tool that under-reads a plateau we can check by more than half cannot be trusted to settle a hill we cannot.
- So: the 200 m figure is not the sanctuary’s height, we are confident the hill is far lower than 200 m, and we do not have a figure we would stand behind. That is the honest position.
We have said as much on the sanctuary’s own record on this site, where the sentence used to read that a low wooded hill rises “roughly two hundred metres high”. It now attributes the figure instead of asserting it. That is a smaller change than replacing the number, and it is the only one the evidence supports.
Why this matters more than a wrong number usually does
Because of what people do with elevation figures at the coast. Two hundred metres above sea level, for a wetland, would mean it was not a coastal wetland at all — no tidal exchange, no salt-fresh mixing, no mangroves, none of the ecology that makes Kadalundi worth protecting. The number is not merely wrong by a factor; it describes a different kind of place. Anyone modelling, mapping or comparing wetlands who ingested that field would get a nonsense result and no error message.
And because the reserve’s whole significance is that it sits at sea level in a rising sea. A mangrove estuary’s future is a question about a few tens of centimetres of water. Publishing it as being two hundred metres up quietly removes it from that conversation.
What to do with a number like this when you meet one
Ask what physical thing it could possibly be the height of. That single question resolves most of these cases in seconds: a reservoir’s surface, a light’s focal plane, a summit rather than a base, a hill behind the thing being described. If no answer fits — if the number cannot be the height of anything present — then it has come from somewhere else entirely, and the right response is to drop it rather than to average it with something better.
