Look up the Malampuzha dam and you will be told, again and again, that it is 115 metres high. The English Wikipedia infobox prints “Height 115.06 m (377.5 ft)”, and from there the figure has been copied into travel pages, listicles and school projects for years. It is not a height. It is a sea level — and this site printed the same error until 21 August 2026, which is part of why the correction is written up here rather than quietly patched.

What the department that owns the dam actually publishes

The Kerala Water Resources Department maintains a project page for Malampuzha, and it lists the salient features as engineering documents do — each number labelled with what it measures. Those labels are the whole story.

There it is, two rows apart: a maximum height of 38.10 m, and a Full Reservoir Level of 115.06 m. Somewhere along the line the second number was lifted out of its row and dropped into a field marked “height”, and nobody downstream had reason to question it.

Why 115.06 m is not a height

Full Reservoir Level is an elevation above mean sea level — the altitude of the water surface when the reservoir is full, measured from the sea, not from the riverbed. The land behind the Malampuzha dam already sits well up on the Palakkad plains, so a water surface at 115 metres above sea level held back by a wall 38 metres tall is not a contradiction. It is the ordinary arithmetic of a dam built on ground that is already high.

The difference is easy to feel if you stand at the downstream toe and look up. Thirty-eight metres is a serious wall — roughly a twelve-storey building. One hundred and fifteen metres would be one of the tallest dams in India, and Malampuzha plainly is not that. The published number contradicts the thing in front of you, which is usually the first sign that a figure has been copied rather than measured.

How to check any dam figure in about a minute
  • Find the state irrigation or water resources department page, not the encyclopaedia. Dams belong to departments, and departments publish salient features.
  • Read the label, not just the number. “FRL”, “MWL” and “sill level” are all elevations above sea level. “Height” is measured from the foundation.
  • If a “height” looks like it would make the dam nationally famous and you have never heard of it, it is almost certainly an elevation.
  • When two official figures disagree, print both and say they disagree. Picking the prettier one is how the error spread in the first place.

Two more numbers here that genuinely do not reconcile

Being right about the height does not make the rest of the record tidy, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. Wikipedia gives the dam’s length as 2,069 m. The department’s masonry and earthen sections add to 1,848.91 m. Those are not the same number and we have found nothing that reconciles them, so we use the department’s figures and leave Wikipedia’s alone rather than averaging two sources into a third number that is nobody’s.

The dates are worse, and the conflict is inside the official page itself. It states that work commenced in 1949, under the First Five Year Plan, and that the project was commissioned in 1955 — the inauguration is usually given as 9 October 1955. The same page also lists a year of completion of 1966, and does not explain the gap. The likeliest reading is that 1955 marks the dam and 1966 the completion of the canal network that made it useful, but that is our inference and we are labelling it as one.

Why a number like this survives for decades

Errors of this shape are not lies and they are not carelessness exactly; they are what happens when a labelled figure is separated from its label. We have run into the identical pattern twice more on this site. A lighthouse on the Malabar coast is variously 30 m and 34 m tall in official records, and both are correct — one is the tower, the other the focal plane of the light above sea level. A hill in Kasaragod is published at 750 m, 780 m and 1,048 m, and two of those are the base and the summit of the same hill.

The tell is always the same. A single physical thing acquires two numbers that cannot both describe it, and instead of asking what each one measures, the internet picks the larger. If you take one habit away from this page, take that one: before you argue about which figure is right, ask what each figure is the height of.

What this means if you are standing there

Practically, very little — except that you should not arrive expecting one of the great high dams of India. What Malampuzha is instead is long, low and wide: nearly 1.85 km of wall holding a sheet of water covering some 22 square kilometres, in the hottest and driest district in Kerala. Its significance is horizontal, not vertical. The 21,349 hectares of farmland it waters are the point, and that story — the canals, the drinking supply, the fishery — is told on this town’s main page rather than repeated here.
