Hold an ordinary mirror at an angle and put a fingertip against it, and there is a gap between the finger and its reflection — the thickness of the glass. Do it with an Aranmula kannadi and the finger touches its own image. That is the whole thing, and it is not a trick.

Front surface, not back surface

The English Wikipedia article describes it precisely: the Aranmula kannadi is a handmade, metal-alloy, first surface mirror. An ordinary mirror is a back-surface mirror — light passes through glass, bounces off a silvered layer behind it, and passes back out through the glass again. Every one of those passages costs a little, and the glass produces faint secondary reflections and aberrations. The Aranmula mirror reflects directly off a polished metal face, so, as the article puts it, it eliminates the secondary reflections and aberrations typical of back-surface mirrors.

Front-surface mirrors are not exotic in themselves — they are standard in telescopes and optical instruments, where the ghosting from a glass layer would matter. What is unusual is one being made as a domestic object, by hand, in a village, from a metal recipe rather than a coating process.

The alloy nobody will confirm

The exact metals are kept secret. That is the sourced statement, and it is worth being careful about how it is repeated: it is not that the composition is unknown to science, it is that the family that makes them does not publish it. Specialists believe the alloy is a mix of copper and tin — a type of speculum metal, which makes it a bronze mirror in the technical sense, and puts it in the same family as the mirrors of the ancient Mediterranean and of Han China.

Speculum metal is high-tin bronze. It takes an extraordinary polish and it is brittle and difficult to cast without flaws, which is the real reason this is a craft rather than an industry. The secret, if the specialists are right about the broad composition, is less likely to be the ingredient list than the proportions and the process — and those are exactly the things that do not survive being written down.

What is documented about the makers
  • They are produced by one extended family in Aranmula.
  • The family is described as descended from Tamil Kammalar artisans — a traditional metalworking community — brought to Aranmula from Tamil Nadu centuries ago.
  • The mirror received a Geographical Indication tag in 2004–05, which legally ties the name to this place.
  • A genuine one is not cheap, and the price is a function of how many castings failed before one came out clean.

Why a GI tag matters here more than usual

A Geographical Indication says that a product with this name must come from this place. For most GI goods that is a marketing protection. For the Aranmula kannadi it is closer to consumer safety, because the thing being imitated is imitable at a glance: polished stainless steel in a similar frame looks similar in a shop and is a completely different object. If you are buying one, the GI is the thing to ask about, and buying in Aranmula itself is the simplest way to be sure.

What it is for

It is an auspicious object as much as a functional one — one of the ashtamangalyam, the eight auspicious items assembled for Kerala ceremonies, and a standard wedding gift. That is worth knowing because it explains the shape. The small, framed, hand-held form is not a design compromise forced by the difficulty of casting a large one; it is the form the object is supposed to have.

They are not the same subject, and we have kept them separate deliberately. A village is not its craft, and a craft made by one family in one village is not a section of a town guide.
