Sirumalai Hills

A reservoir on the Varadhamanadhi river fed by the Sirumalai hills, an irrigation dam and local picnic spot near Nilakottai in Dindigul district, and a drinking-water source for Palani.

A hilltop Shiva temple in the Sirumalai range, traditionally believed to have been worshipped by the sage Agasthiyar. Reaching the shrine involves a short trek of about an hour up the hill. It combines pilgrimage interest with scenic forest and valley views.

A handloom town on the Dindigul-Madurai highway, about 12 km from Dindigul, whose economy turns on silk-and-cotton saree weaving. Its weavers are known for fine, lightweight sarees made with a kora silk warp and mercerised cotton weft in the weft-ikat tie-and-dye technique, and for sungudi tie-and-dye cotton. Gandhigram Rural Institute sits just outside the town.

A Hanuman temple at Anaipatti in Nilakottai taluk, reputed to be around 300 years old. It is traditionally said to have been established by Rani Mangammal, the Nayak queen of Madurai. Set beside a river, it is one of the older village shrines of the area.

A Roman Catholic church built between 1866 and 1872, serving as the mother church of the Catholic congregations of the Dindigul area. It is among the oldest and most important Christian places of worship in the district. The colonial-era structure is a notable heritage landmark.

A 17th-century hilltop rock fort built by the Madurai Nayaks, later held by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan; the Abirami Amman temple sits at its base.

A prominent Shakti temple dedicated to Goddess Abirami in the centre of Dindigul town. One of the city's most-visited shrines, it draws large crowds during Navaratri. The temple is built in the South Indian Dravidian style.

A historic large mosque in the Begambur area of Dindigul dating from the Nayak and later Mysore period, one of the town's oldest Islamic monuments.

An ancient Mariamman temple, over 200 years old, within the historic Dindigul fort precinct. Local tradition holds the idol was installed during the era of Tipu Sultan. It is one of Dindigul's most revered folk-goddess shrines.

A roughly 400-acre monsoon-fed reservoir near Athoor, formed by the Kamarajar Sagar Dam and overlooked by the Western Ghats. A noted birdwatching spot, it hosts hundreds of bird species, with coracle fishermen and coconut, banana and cardamom estates along its shores. It is one of the most scenic water bodies in the district.

A Vishnu temple in Thadikombu on the Karur road near Dindigul town, considered as sacred as the Kallalagar temple near Madurai and known for its Nayak-era sculpture.

A picturesque irrigation dam across the Manjalar river, about ten kilometres from Batlagundu in Dindigul district. Set against the backdrop of the Western Ghats, it has calm blue waters and green surroundings. It is a popular local picnic and sightseeing spot.
