Common scams & how to dodge them

• Temple 'guide' and prasad-donation pressure — At major temples, unofficial 'guides' or people posing as priests may attach themselves to you, perform a quick blessing or hand you prasad, then demand a large 'donation'. Politely decline unsolicited help, only use guides with official tourism-department ID, and give offerings directly at the temple's own donation box or counter rather than to individuals.
• Silk and handicraft commission touts — In silk and craft towns like Kanchipuram and busy tourist bazaars, drivers, 'guides' or friendly strangers may steer you to a specific shop where prices are inflated to cover their commission. Choose shops yourself, compare a few, and be wary of anyone insisting a particular emporium is the 'only genuine' or 'government approved' one.
• 'Meter not working' autos — Auto-rickshaw drivers may claim the meter is broken and quote an inflated flat fare, especially near stations and tourist sites. Agree the price before getting in, ask your hotel what a fair fare is, or use app-based cabs and autos (Ola, Uber) so the price is fixed upfront.
• Gem resale and 'temple closing' schemes — Be cautious of anyone offering to sell gemstones you can supposedly resell for profit abroad, or telling you a temple or attraction is 'closed for a ceremony' and offering to take you somewhere else (usually a shop) instead. Practical essentials

• Language — Tamil is the official language and a strong point of local pride. English is widely used in cities, hotels, transport hubs and anywhere tourism-facing, but it is noticeably less common in rural areas and small towns. Learning a few Tamil phrases (Vanakkam for hello, Nandri for thanks) goes a long way, and a translation app is handy off the main tourist trail.
• Money — The currency is the Indian rupee (INR). UPI apps and cards are accepted at most city shops, hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for small towns, local buses, temple offerings, roadside eateries and market stalls. Keep small denomination notes for autos, tips and donations.
• Getting around — Trains and state (TNSTC) buses connect towns cheaply; book longer trains ahead via IRCTC. Within cities, app cabs (Ola, Uber) and autos are easiest; agree an auto fare or insist on the meter before starting. Hiring a car with driver for a day is common and affordable for temple-town circuits like Madurai, Thanjavur and Kanchipuram.
• Timing — The comfortable season is roughly November to February when the weather is cooler and drier. April and May are very hot on the plains. The northeast monsoon brings rain mainly October to December, heaviest around Chennai and the coast. Plan sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon to avoid midday heat.
• Dress — Tamil Nadu is fairly traditional, especially around its many active temples. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees; some temples require removing footwear and, at a few, men to remove shirts and women to be well covered. Lightweight, breathable cotton clothing suits the heat and shows respect.

• Dress modestly at temples — Cover shoulders and knees at temples and shrines; footwear must be removed before entering, and some inner sanctums restrict entry to Hindus.
• Remove your shoes — Take off shoes before entering homes, temples and many shops — leave them at the entrance as others do.
• Eat with your right hand — Food, especially a banana-leaf meal, is traditionally eaten with the right hand; the left hand is considered unclean for handling food.
• Dress conservatively in temple towns — In rural areas and temple towns like Madurai, Kanchipuram or Rameswaram, modest clothing is respected and draws less unwanted attention.
• Ask before photographing — Seek permission before photographing people, priests or rituals, and note that photography is often prohibited inside temple sanctums.
