A successful Kavalur visit begins hours before the first star. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics currently opens VBO to ordinary visitors every Saturday from 2 to 9 PM. It sells general tickets only from 2 to 4:30 PM, so closing time is not arrival time.
Two ticket windows, one weather condition
Admission is ₹50 for people aged twelve and above, with younger children free. Visitors joining only the sky programme have a 6:30–7:15 PM sales window. Stargazing remains subject to weather, and staff may change outdoor activity when cloud, humidity or rain makes observation unsuitable.
Use daylight well
The daytime programme introduces the 2.3-metre telescope and the solar coelostat, whose mirrors direct a stable solar image and spectrum. This turns waiting for darkness into the scientific foundation of the visit rather than an empty interval.
Arrange the return first
The routed road from Alangayam’s exact town node is 11.78 kilometres. Do not assume an app taxi or late bus at Kavalur. Agree waiting time and the gate pickup with a driver before entering, and never plan to walk back on the dark road.
