M. K. Vainu Bappu wanted sustained stellar observation from India, but Kodaikanal did not provide suitable skies for enough prolonged exposures. He searched hills across southern India and selected Kavalur’s plateau for stable air, access to southern skies and proximity to technical centres.

Begin small, learn quickly

An indigenous 34-centimetre reflector began work in 1968, followed by the 102-centimetre Carl Zeiss telescope in 1972. Work at Kavalur contributed to evidence for Ganymede’s atmosphere and the 1977 discovery of rings around Uranus.

A posthumous name

The 2.34-metre instrument was designed as a major Indian project, but Bappu died in 1982. Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated it on 6 January 1986, and both telescope and observatory were formally named for the scientist who had not lived to see completion.

Research instrument, not tourist eyepiece

The Saturday public programme uses smaller telescopes for guided sky observation. The great tower should be understood as active research infrastructure; access, maintenance and scientific work take priority over a visitor’s expectation.
