Grand Anicut

Also called Kallanai, this is one of the oldest functioning water-diversion dams in the world, built across the Kaveri by the Chola king Karikalan around the 2nd century CE. Constructed of unhewn stone about 300 metres long, it still regulates irrigation across the Thanjavur delta after nearly two millennia. It is a landmark of ancient Tamil hydraulic engineering and a popular picnic spot.
