Unhewn stone set in a curve

The original dam was built of unhewn stone — undressed blocks set in a curve across the river bed and held in place by the weight of the water and the mass of the wall. In its present form it runs a little over 300 metres long, some 20 metres wide and around 5 metres high, according to the standard figures. The point of the curve and the breadth of the barrage was to spread the river’s push across a wide front and turn it gently into the delta channels rather than damming it outright.

Where the Kaveri divides

Here the Kaveri divides. Upstream the river splits into two arms that enclose the temple island of Srirangam before rejoining; the northern arm becomes the Kollidam, or Coleroon, while the southern keeps the name Kaveri. The Grand Anicut governs how this water is shared out among the delta’s distributaries. A little upstream stands the Upper Anicut, better known as Mukkombu, a nineteenth-century regulator that controls the split between the Kaveri and the Kollidam, complementing the ancient dam below.

A model for British engineers

When British engineers arrived they found the old anicut both a problem and a teacher. By the early nineteenth century much of the river’s flow was escaping down the Kollidam, starving the irrigation channels. In 1804 Captain Caldwell raised the crest of the dam by about 69 centimetres to hold back more water. Later in the century the irrigation engineer Sir Arthur Cotton studied the Grand Anicut closely and took it as a model for his own works, including the Upper Anicut at Mukkombu, built in the late 1830s, and a companion dam across the Kollidam.

Cotton’s careful attention to the old Chola design carried its principles into the modern age of Indian irrigation, and the works he raised alongside the ancient barrage still regulate the delta today.
