Few journeys in India begin as gently and end as high as the ride from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam. At dawn the little blue train waits on the plains at the foot of the Nilgiris, a steam locomotive hissing at its lower end. Over the next five hours it will claw its way up more than 1,800 metres of hillside, through forest and tunnels and past terraced tea, to the old summer capital that the British called Ooty. This is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a working piece of Victorian engineering that has never really stopped being used, and one of the few places on earth where you can still ride a scheduled steam service up a toothed rack.

A line half a century in the making

The idea of a railway up the Nilgiris was floated as early as the 1850s, but the slope defeated the surveyors for decades. An ordinary train relies on friction between smooth wheels and smooth rails, and no such train could hold the grade the hillside demanded without sliding back. The answer, when it finally came, was a rack railway: a toothed bar laid between the running rails, gripped by a cog beneath the locomotive. Construction on the rack line began in the 1890s, and the section from Mettupalayam up to Coonoor opened in June 1899. It took another nine years to push the easier, adhesion-worked stretch onward through Wellington and Aruvankadu, reaching Fernhill and then Udhagamandalam by October 1908. What had started as a colonial hill-station convenience had become one of the boldest mountain lines of its age.

How the rack tames the mountain

The Nilgiri line uses the Abt system, a refinement of the rack-railway principle in which the toothed bar and the driving cog mesh smoothly enough to carry a train up gradients that would be unthinkable on a plain track. Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor the ruling grade reaches about 1 in 12 – a rise of one metre for every twelve travelled – which makes it one of the steepest rack sections in Asia. On this lower stretch the metre-gauge steam locomotives are always marshalled at the downhill end of the train, so that they push the carriages up the slope rather than pull them, keeping the coupling and the cog under control. Speeds are modest by design: around 30 km/h down on the plains, but only a walking-pace crawl on the rack, where safety and adhesion matter far more than haste.

Tunnels, viaducts and the sound of steam

What the passenger remembers is not the grade but the theatre of it. The climb threads through 16 tunnels and crosses a long succession of bridges and viaducts – some 250 in all – many of them elegant stone arches spanning ravines where streams tumble far below. The alignment writhes through more than two hundred curves, so the engine at the far end swings repeatedly into view, trailing smoke against the forest. The steam fleet at the heart of the operation is the X class, oil-fired locomotives built largely by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, the same country whose rack railways inspired the line. On the gentler upper section from Coonoor to Ooty, YDM-4 diesel locomotives now do much of the work, but it is the steam engines on the rack that give the railway its living, breathing character.

A World Heritage ride today

In 2005 UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to the “Mountain Railways of India” World Heritage listing, joining the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka–Shimla line as an outstanding example of hill railway engineering that shaped the landscapes it crosses. Today the full journey between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam still takes the best part of five hours uphill, calling at a string of small stations – Kallar, Hillgrove, Runnymede, Coonoor, Wellington – that feel little changed. The most popular and reliably steam-worked leg for visitors is the shorter run between Coonoor and Ooty, but purists ride the whole line from the plains up. However you take it, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is less a way of getting to Ooty than a reason to go.
