Mysore in 2 Days: A Weekend Itinerary

Mysore rewards a weekend. Two days is enough to see the Wodeyar royal city at an unhurried pace and still take in the temples, gardens and Hoysala carving that ring it. From Bengaluru the drive is about 145 km and roughly three hours on the NH-275 expressway, so many visitors leave on Friday night or early Saturday and are back by Sunday evening. This plan gives Day 1 to the city — the palace, Chamundi Hills and the zoo — and Day 2 to the circuit outside it, the island fort of Srirangapatna to the north and the Hoysala temple at Somanathapura to the east. If you only have a one-day trip to Mysore, Day 1 alone stands on its own.

Day 1: the city

Start high and early. Chamundi Hills rises about 13 km from the centre, topped by the Chamundeshwari Temple and, partway down the pilgrim path, a giant Nandi carved from a single boulder in 1659. Go first thing to beat the queues and the heat and to catch the view over the city before haze builds. Back down, give the late morning to Mysore Palace, the Amba Vilas seat of the maharajas, rebuilt in Indo-Saracenic style in 1912 and Karnataka's most-visited monument; it opens at 10:00 am, footwear is left at a counter and interior photography is not allowed. A short walk west, Jaganmohan Palace holds the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery with its Raja Ravi Varma paintings — a quieter, art-focused hour.

Spend the afternoon on the family side of the city. The Mysore Zoo, the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens founded in 1892, is one of India's oldest and best-run, with spacious enclosures for gorillas, giraffes, elephants and big cats; note that it is closed on Tuesdays. Right beside it, Karanji Lake has one of the largest walk-through aviaries in the country and easy birding below Chamundi Hill. Close the day back at the palace for the illumination, or, if it is not a lit evening, detour to St. Philomena's Cathedral, a Neo-Gothic church of 1956 whose twin spires were modelled on Cologne Cathedral. Day 2: Srirangapatna & Somanathapura

The second day belongs to the countryside around Mysore, though the two headline sights lie on opposite sides of the city, so pick a direction or plan a longer day. North, on an island in the Kaveri toward Bengaluru, sits Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's fort capital. Start at the Ranganathaswamy Temple, then take an early boat at the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary nearby, and finish at the Brindavan Gardens laid out below the KRS dam. East of Mysore instead lies the Chennakeshava Temple at Somanathapura, the last great Hoysala temple, consecrated in 1268 CE and inscribed by UNESCO in 2023; its star-shaped triple shrine and dense soapstone carving photograph best in morning light. How to reach and tips

Mysuru Junction has fast trains from Bengaluru, and KSRTC and private buses run frequently on the NH-275 expressway; within the city, autos and app cabs are easy, though a hired car pays off on Day 2. Time your weekend to include a Sunday if you can — the palace facade is lit on Sunday evenings and public holidays, roughly 7:00 to 7:45 pm, and through the September–October Dasara. The zoo and Karanji Lake both close on Tuesdays, so shuffle the plan if you arrive early in the week. October to February is the most comfortable window.
