The Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangapatna is dedicated to Ranganatha, Vishnu in his reclining form, and is the first of the three great "Ranga" temples down the Kaveri (Adi Ranga), a revered Divya Desam. It gives the island town its name — Sri-Ranga-pattana.

Begun in the 9th century and enlarged by the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara and Mysore rulers, it is a large complex with a tall gopuram, pillared halls and a long tradition of worship at the heart of the fortified river-island.
