Madikeri Fort

Madikeri Fort crowns a low hill in the centre of the Kodagu capital. First raised in mud by the Haleri raja Muddu Raja in the late 17th century, it was rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan and later modified by the British, so its walls mix Kodagu, Islamic and colonial work.

Within the ramparts today are government offices, a Gothic-style St Mark’s Church that houses a small museum, a clock tower, a colonial-era prison and a pair of masonry elephants, with views over Madikeri’s red roofs and hills.
