Overview
Alleppey’s backwaters connect lakes, rivers and village canals around Alappuzha. A houseboat offers a room and an agreed cruise, while smaller boats can explore narrower waterways. Choose the boat format, boarding jetty and route before comparing prices; meals and overnight accommodation depend on the booking.
What to know before you go
The backwaters around Alappuzha combine open water with narrower canals beside paddy fields and villages. Kerala Tourism describes traditional kettuvallam houseboats built with wood, bamboo and coir, alongside canoeing and kayaking on smaller waterways.
For a short outing, compare the proposed route and time afloat. For an overnight stay, establish whether the quote covers the whole houseboat or a cabin, which rooms you will use and where the boat stops at night. A lakeside hotel room and a houseboat cabin offer different experiences; compare them separately.
Before you book or visit
Ask for the named boarding jetty and return point before arranging road transport. Obtain the boat name, passenger limit, meal plan, air-conditioning schedule and cancellation terms in writing. Check the specific provider against Kerala Tourism’s houseboat directory; a directory entry does not confirm availability or every boat in an operator’s fleet. Agree the route with the provider rather than assuming a backwater landscape has one entrance or fixed visiting hours.
