Alleppey Backwaters

History & overview

The Alleppey (Alappuzha) Backwaters are a labyrinthine network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets fringed with coconut palms, paddy fields and villages, giving the town its nickname 'Venice of the East'. The name Alappuzha means 'the land between the sea and the network of rivers flowing into it'. Traditional kettuvallam houseboats (originally cargo barges made of bamboo, coir and wood) now cruise these waterways for tourists.
