Athirappilly & Vazhachal
Athirappilly Falls, where the Chalakudy river plunges ~24 m through rainforest, is Kerala’s largest waterfall and a classic full-day trip from Kochi (it’s in Thrissur district, ~63–70 km away). Downstream are the Vazhachal rapids and Charpa falls, set in Sholayar forest that’s home to all four South Indian hornbill species; a DTPC jungle safari runs from the area. Go early — the falls are busiest midday and forest checkpoints close to traffic by evening.
No night travel — the forest checkpoints close to vehicles around 6:30 pm IST. Plan to be out before dusk.
- Getting there
- By taxi via Chalakudy (the usual route); buses run to Chalakudy then local transport to the falls. Start early.
- Best time
- Post-monsoon (Sep–Jan) for the fullest flow; the falls run year-round.
Distances and timings are indicative — confirm locally. See getting around Kochi.
