A walking order that works
The compactness of this quarter is its own argument: you can see most of it on foot in a day, and the only real planning question is what to do when. Put the ticketed indoor sites in the hot middle of the day and end at the water for golden hour.
That gives an order roughly like this: the Naval Maritime Museum, then the Dutch Cemetery (1724 — usually locked, so it is viewed from outside), the Indo-Portuguese Museum (no photography inside), the VOC Gate by the Parade Ground, lunch, Santa Cruz Basilica, St Francis Church — 1503, and Vasco da Gama's original grave slab is still marked inside, though his remains were moved to Lisbon — then Bastion Bungalow, and the beach by about half four.
One hard constraint to plan around rather than discover: Bastion Bungalow closes on Mondays and shuts for an hour or so in the early afternoon. It is a 1667 Dutch building raised on the circular Stormberg bastion of the old fort, it now holds the Ernakulam District Heritage Museum, and the upper level gives a panoramic view back over the beach.
What you are walking through, historically, is the wreckage of three empires stacked on one headland. The Portuguese built Fort Immanuel in the early 1500s with seven bastions; when the Dutch took Kochi in 1663 they set about demolishing it and cut it to roughly a third of its size. Very little of the fort survives above ground — what survives is the street plan and the buildings raised on its bones.
Timing, and what the sunset is actually like
The promenade fills in the last hour of daylight: vendors, carts, street performers, and a crowd along the nets. It is genuinely worth it, and it is also the least peaceful hour of the day here. Sunrise is the opposite — quiet, and the nets are more often being properly worked rather than demonstrated.
If you are here in Biennale season the calculation changes, because Aspinwall House and other venues around the seafront become the main event. Outside it, those warehouse venues are closed.
