Arippara is in Kodanchery, on the main stem, and nobody has measured it

Arippara is one of those places whose published description is almost entirely inherited rather than checked. Four claims are near-universal, and none of them survives.

The panchayat

Arippara is in Kodanchery gram panchayat — ward 8, Manjuvayal — in Koduvally block, Thamarassery taluk, Kozhikode district. The district tourism body, the state’s digital directory and essentially every travel site say Thiruvambadi panchayat.

Thiruvambadi here is the assembly constituency, which is a different kind of boundary altogether, and the Thiruvambadi panchayat’s own area centres about five kilometres away. Thiruvambady is simply the nearest town, which is presumably how the error started. The independent corroboration is pleasing: an industry report on the hydro project places it “at Arippara, near Kodencheri”, and Malayalam news reporting says Kodencheri too.

The river

English Wikipedia and the district administration both describe the waterfall as being on a tributary of the Iruvanjippuzha, copied verbatim between them. It is on the Iruvanjipuzha main stem, which is itself a tributary of the Chaliyar. The river rises at Vellarimala at 1,544 metres and runs about fifty kilometres to its confluence with the Chaliyar near Cheruvadi.

The confusion has a specific source, and it is worth knowing because it recurs constantly in listings for this district. The Chalippuzha is a genuine tributary of the Iruvanjipuzha — and the Chalippuzha is the river at Thusharagiri. Two waterfall sites, one river system, endlessly swapped.

On spelling: Iruvanjipuzha is the form used by Kerala Tourism, the district tourism body and the reference works, and it is what we print. Iruvazhinji and Iruvazhanjippuzha are variants used by the airport company and by the map data.

The dimensions

You will find Arippara given as fifty metres high, with four drops, a flow of twenty-five cubic metres per second and a width of three metres. All four come from a single uncited infobox.

That infobox sits on a page that also gives the waterfall’s coordinates as 11.07 north, 76.23 east — which is about forty-five kilometres away, near Nilambur, in a different district. When a page puts a waterfall forty-five kilometres from where it is, its measurements have not been checked either. We print no dimensions for Arippara, because as far as we can establish nobody has measured it.

The distance

Every source says fifteen kilometres from Thiruvambady, and they say it in the same words, which is usually a sign of copying rather than of measuring. Routing engines give 9.0 kilometres, about twelve minutes. We cannot reproduce fifteen by any road we can find, so we give the routed figures and flag the discrepancy rather than repeating a number we cannot stand behind.

For the record, the drives that do reproduce: 44.6 kilometres and about fifty-one minutes from Kozhikode city; 2.9 kilometres from Anakkampoyil, which is also the nearest bus stand at 5.2 kilometres by road; 14.2 kilometres from Mukkam. The falls sit about a kilometre off SH 59, the Hill Highway.

And two smaller ones

At least one major travel site files Arippara under Wayanad, and another under Kalpetta. It is in Kozhikode district, on the Kozhikode flank of the ghats — the drive is east out of the city, not up into Wayanad.

And the name is sometimes glossed as “rock of rice”. No authority is cited for that anywhere we looked, and we are not going to assert an etymology on the strength of a repeated gloss. It may well be right. Nobody has shown it.
