Three days isn’t long, so this route keeps the driving short and the highlights high: a day in the old port streets of Fort Kochi, a houseboat night on the Alleppey backwaters, and an easy loop back. It’s the perfect long-weekend or stopover introduction to Kerala, all within a couple of hours of Cochin (COK) airport.
The 3-day route at a glance
| Day | Base | Drive | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fort Kochi | — | Chinese fishing nets, heritage streets, Kathakali |
| 2 | Kochi → Alleppey | about 1.5 hrs | Board a houseboat, overnight on the water |
| 3 | Alleppey → Kochi | about 1.5 hrs | Disembark, departure |
Day 1 — Fort Kochi
Spend the day in Fort Kochi, the old port peninsula. Walk the Portuguese, Dutch and British heritage streets, watch the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets at the harbour mouth (best near sunset), and browse the art cafés in former trading houses. In the evening, catch a Kathakali performance — arrive an hour early for the make-up demonstration.
Day 2 — Kochi to Alleppey
It’s only about an hour and a half to Alleppey, so there’s no rush. Board a houseboat around midday, spend the afternoon drifting the backwaters, take dinner cooked aboard and moor on the water for the night. Our houseboat guide covers booking a classified boat and avoiding the common bait-and-switch.
Day 3 — Alleppey to Kochi
Houseboats usually check out around 9am after breakfast, leaving an unhurried final morning. From Alleppey it’s about an hour and a half back to Kochi for your onward flight or train.
Extending the trip
With two more days you can add Munnar’s tea hills for the classic loop — see our 5-day Kochi–Munnar–Alleppey itinerary. October to March is the ideal window; our best-time-to-visit guide has the month-by-month detail, and the getting-around guide explains transport.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Kerala?
For a first taste, yes — three days comfortably covers Fort Kochi and an Alleppey houseboat night with very little driving. For the tea hills too, you’ll want five days.
What’s the best time for this short break?
October to March, when the coast is dry and the backwaters are calm. The June–September monsoon is greener and cheaper but wet.
Can I do this as a stopover?
Yes — it starts and ends at Cochin (COK), so it works well as a two-night stopover or a long weekend from elsewhere in India.
How far is Alleppey from Kochi airport?
Roughly 1.5 hours by road, which is what makes this compact loop possible in three days.
