Two unhurried days are enough for a first visit to Kochi: one for the walkable heritage of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, and one for the mainland city, a beach or backwater village, and an evening on the water.
The 2-day plan at a glance
| Day | Focus | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fort Kochi & Mattancherry | Chinese nets, churches, Dutch Palace, synagogue, Kathakali |
| 2 | Mainland & the water | Hill Palace or a museum, Cherai or Kumbalangi, sunset cruise |
Day 1 — Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
Spend the first day on foot in the heritage quarter — the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church and Santa Cruz Basilica, then the Dutch Palace and Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry, ending with an evening Kathakali show. This is the Fort Kochi in a day plan — mind that the palace closes Fridays and the synagogue Fridays and Saturdays.
Day 2 — mainland, a beach and the water
Cross to the mainland for the Hill Palace museum or the Kerala Folklore Museum (Hill Palace closes Mondays), then choose a half-day out to Cherai Beach on Vypin or the backwater village of Kumbalangi. End with a sunset cruise or Water Metro ride from Marine Drive.
If you have more time
A third day opens up the Athirappilly day trip or the Muziris and Kalady heritage belt. For seasons and getting around, see the best time to visit Kerala.
Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days enough for Kochi?
Yes for the highlights — one day for Fort Kochi and Mattancherry’s heritage on foot, and one for the mainland, a beach or backwater village and an evening on the water. A third day lets you add the Athirappilly waterfall or the Kalady–Muziris heritage belt.
What should I not miss in Kochi?
The Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church and Santa Cruz Basilica in Fort Kochi, the Dutch Palace murals and Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry, an evening Kathakali performance, and time on the water via the ferry or Water Metro.
Which days are Kochi’s main sights closed?
The Dutch (Mattancherry) Palace closes Fridays, the Paradesi Synagogue closes Fridays and Saturdays, and the Hill Palace museum closes Mondays. Plan your two days so these fall on an open day.
