About

About Ernakulam

Ernakulam is the busy mainland city of Kochi (Cochin) — the commercial, shopping and transport hub that most travellers actually arrive into. Its signature is Marine Drive, a wide pedestrian promenade along the backwaters where families gather for sunset and boat jetties run cruises out across the harbour. Inland, MG Road and the older Broadway bazaar are Kerala’s liveliest shopping streets, the Durbar Hall Art Centre shows contemporary work, and the Kochi Metro and government ferries make it easy to hop across to Fort Kochi, Vypeen and Willingdon Island. It’s the practical base for exploring greater Kochi: well connected, full of places to eat, and minutes from the water.

Safety & practical info

Is Ernakulam safe?

Overall
Ernakulam is a busy but generally safe city. The main risk is traffic — use the footpaths and marked crossings, and the Metro to skip congestion.
Solo & women travellers
Central areas (Marine Drive, MG Road, the Metro) are comfortable and well-used. Pre-book autos/cabs late at night and stick to lit main roads.
Traffic & autos
Insist on the meter or agree a fare first. The Kochi Metro is the easiest, fixed-price way to cross the city centre.
Backwater boats
Use the government jetty or a recognised operator, wear the life jacket if offered, and avoid overloaded private boats.
Monsoon (Jun–Sep)
Some low-lying roads waterlog briefly during heavy rain; carry rain cover and allow extra travel time.
Health
Drink sealed or filtered water. Ernakulam has Kochi’s largest concentration of hospitals and pharmacies.

FAQs

Ernakulam — common questions

What is the difference between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi?

Ernakulam is the modern mainland city — shopping, business, the railway stations and the Metro. Fort Kochi is the historic island quarter across the harbour, with the Chinese fishing nets, colonial churches and Jew Town. Most visitors stay in one and ferry or drive to the other.

How do you get around Ernakulam?

The Kochi Metro runs along the MG Road / Marine Drive corridor and is the easiest way across the centre. Auto-rickshaws are everywhere (use the meter), and government ferries from the main jetty reach Fort Kochi and Vypeen cheaply.

Is Ernakulam good for shopping?

Yes — MG Road and the older Broadway market are Kerala’s busiest shopping streets for textiles, gold and spices, and large malls like LuLu sit on the city’s edge.

Can you do a backwater cruise from Ernakulam?

Yes. Boats leave from the Marine Drive / High Court boat jetty for harbour and backwater cruises — a quick, affordable alternative to a full Alleppey day trip.
