Plain on the outside, heavy with history within — St Francis Church is one of the oldest European churches in India and one of Fort Kochi's most significant sights. It has stood since 1503, watching the Portuguese, Dutch and British each take their turn at Cochin.

Visiting in brief
  • Built: originally 1503 by the Portuguese.
  • Famous for: Vasco da Gama's original gravestone; one of India's oldest European churches.
  • Where: central Fort Kochi, a short walk from the Chinese fishing nets.
  • Etiquette: it's an active church — dress modestly and keep quiet during services.

Vasco da Gama's first grave

When the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524, on his third visit to India, he was buried inside this church. His remains were moved to Lisbon about fifteen years later — but the spot is still marked, and standing beside it is the closest most visitors come to the age of exploration that reshaped this coast.

A building that changed hands

The church mirrors Cochin's colonial relay: built Roman Catholic under the Portuguese, it passed to the Dutch Protestants in the 17th century and to the Anglicans under the British. Each left a mark on its fabric and furnishings, which is part of why historians treat it as a witness to European colonial ambition in India. The longer story is in our history of Fort Kochi.

What to look for

Inside, find da Gama's gravestone, the old punkahs (hand-pulled cloth fans) slung above the pews, and centuries of memorial tablets along the walls. It's a five-minute visit or a contemplative half-hour, depending on your pace. Combine it with the Santa Cruz Basilica and the fishing nets close by.
