Nelliyampathy begins before the hilltop. From Nenmara, the road passes Pothundi Dam and climbs through forest and plantations. Kerala Tourism’s Palakkad brochure describes ten hairpin bends on the ascent; another tourism video gives a different count. The practical point is the narrow, curving road, not a number to count through a windscreen.
Read the route in stages
Pothundi is the first named stop. Above it, forest and ghat-road views lead toward a hill region where tea, coffee, cardamom and oranges have all been cultivated. The Palakkad district administration lists these crops and names Seetharkundu, Manpara and Kesavanpara among local viewpoints. The same district page says forest treks need Forest Division permission.
A plantation seen from the road is a working property, not a public trail. Kerala Tourism’s brochure suggests Palagapandi Estate for its landscape and heritage bungalow, but it does not make every field, factory or bungalow freely accessible. Ask the operator about a legitimate tour or stay before entering an estate road.
Plan for cloud rather than a postcard
The hill country changes quickly with mist and rain. Leave daylight for the descent, do not stop on a blind hairpin for a photograph, and check current road or forest restrictions on the day. A viewpoint may disappear in cloud while the drive through forest and plantations remains worthwhile.
